Silhoutted by the Margalla hills Shah Faisal Mosque in the Shaarah-e-Islamabad of Islalmabad is a great pilgrimage center of Pakistan. Shah Faisal Mosque is the State National Mosque of Islamabad, Pakistan and the largest mosque in the world by area. Constructed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay the mosque embody a non-conventional design unlike the traditional dome architecture. The mosque was subjected to various criticisms for its non-traditional structure that lacked the traditional doom like structure.

The construction began in 1976 under the authority of National Construction of Pakistan. The project was financed by Saudi Arabian government. King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz initiated the funding process. Hence the name of the mosque and the road leading to it were named after him. The expense was approximately hundred thirty million Saudi riyals. The mausoleum of general Muhmmad Zia-ul-haq is located close to the mosque. The mosque houses International Islamic University.
The mosque portray an octagonal desert tent like structure pillared by gigantic girders and encircled by concrete minuets. The central structure is built in marbles and beautifully decorated with chandeliers and mosaics inside. There are vast triangular prayer halls and four minarets displaying fine Turkish architecture. The interior of the prayer halls are simply magnificent with gorgeous chandelier and mosaics. The calligraphy of Sadeqain a famous Pakistani artist is wonderful. The mosaic pattern embellishing the west wall, has the beautiful kufic script inscribed on it in stunning mirror image pattern. The mosque's architecture is a spectacular mix of Arabic, Turkish and Pakistani Muslim architectural traditions.
