Rawal Lake

Rawal Lake in Pakistan is an artificial reservoir. The lake that provides water for the cities in Rawalpindi and Islamabad covers an area of 8.8km. The Rawal Lake is located within the Margalla Hills National Park. The outside area around the Rawal lake is all decorated the complete area has been planted with trees, flowers, beautiful gardens, picnic spots and many secluded paths. There are also terraced garden. Both the garden and the lake are used as nice picnic spot. Many people visit the place for spending leisure time. The sunset at Rawal Lake reservoir is another attraction that draws many towards it. The lake is considered as main water source for residents of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The area is all encircled with picnic spots. The garden adjacent to Rawal Lake has a highest point that gives a splendid upper view of the Rawal, Margallah and Murree hills, Rawalpindi and Islamabad. In the western portion of the lake is located the Islamabad Club, which offers different sporting facilities. The lake also offers its visitors facilities like Sailing, boating and fishing. There is also a restaurant beside the Rawal Lake that offers snacks and other local food items.

Another major attraction that draws thousands of visitors towards Rawal Lake is the wildlife in the reservoir. There are beautiful waterfowl available of varied species especially the Anas platyrhynchos. Among the mammals include the commonly available porcupine, jungle cat, yellow throated marten, fox, jackal, pangolin, porcupine. Among the reptiles include the Indian cobra and Russell's viper.

The reservoir is about 3sq miles in length, 102 feet deep, with a storage facility of about 43000 acre feet. Many canals are also linked with the huge reservoir including the Left Bank Canal of about 5 miles and the Right Bank Canal of 1.5 miles in length. The reservoir supplies drinking water not only to the local residents but also to the people residing in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. About 19.5 million gallons of water is supplied per day in Rawalpindi and Islamabad gets 2.5 million gallons of water each day.
